Social and Behavioral Sciences Core

The Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) Core works to fulfill the DC CFAR’s mission by advancing understanding of the ways in which social-structural factors continue to impede the health of people living with HIV (PWH) and disproportionately drive the acquisition of HIV among communities disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic

The Core provides opportunities for continuing education, training, and access to resources related to theory, methods, analyses, and social and behavioral research design. The Core also aims to facilitate the conduct of community-engaged research that is guided by, responsive to, and of benefit to diverse communities at the local, regional and national level. In this way, the Core ensures that DC CFAR research is innovative and has maximum potential for impact.

Specific Aims

  • Aim 1: Support HIV scientists developing and implementing innovative and theoretically and methodologically rigorous grant applications that draw on the social and behavioral sciences. 
  • Aim 2: Foster and strengthen DC CFAR implementation science (IS) expertise by providing support to investigators who are developing and carrying out high impact IS grants and initiatives. 
  • Aim 3: Support academic investigators and community partners in developing, implementing and disseminating responsive, collaborative and impactful community driven research. 
  • Aim 4: Advance knowledge and use of state-of-the art social and behavioral science theory, methods and interventions within the SBS Core, across the DC CFAR and through a team science approach.
