Brief History of the DC CFAR

HIV/AIDS Institute (2006-2010)

The HIV/AIDS Institute was the precursor of the DC CFAR and was formed in 2006 with 17 investigators from five institutions - George Washington University, Georgetown University, Howard University, Children’s National Hospital, and the DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The goal of the Institute was to mobilize the academic response to the severe local HIV epidemic in DC. The Institute grew to include 81 investigators by 2009.

DC Developmental Center for AIDS Research (2010-2015)

The HIV/AIDS Institute led the successful application to the NIH to establish the DC Developmental Center for AIDS Research (DC D-CFAR) from 2010-2015. American University joined as the sixth institutional partner in 2012.

The DC D-CFAR applied successfully to transition to a full DC CFAR from 2015-2020, and was renewed from 2020-2025. DC Health and Whitman-Walker joined as the seventh and eighth institution partners in 2017, and Us Helping Us, People Into Living joined as the ninth institutional partner in 2022. The DC CFAR now includes 260 investigator members. The DC CFAR leadership works closely with the Community Partnership Council which voices community priorities and concerns, and contributes critical scientific and managerial perspectives to the DC CFAR.
