Update on the DC CFAR Executive Committee - Departure of Dr. Douglas Nixon; Drs. Nekhai and Bukrinsky to Lead Basic Sciences Core

Having made extraordinary contributions to HIV research in DC, Dr. Douglas Nixon, Professor and Chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Tropical Medicine (MITM) at GW, has accepted a faculty position in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. Among his numerous and notable accomplishments, Dr. Nixon served as the DC CFAR Co-Director and Basic Sciences Core Director, is PI of the BELIEVE Martin Delaney Collaboratory for HIV cure research, and recruited, mentored and supported numerous HIV laboratory researchers in DC. Dr. Nixon will remain engaged with HIV research in DC through the clinical, laboratory and community elements of the BELIEVE collaboratory.  We wish Dr. Nixon the best of success as he transitions to this next phase of his exciting career, and express our collective gratitude to him for his innovative science, collaborative spirit, and commitment to service and mentorship.

In accordance with the DC CFAR succession plan, we are pleased to announce that the Basic Sciences Core Co-Director, Dr. Sergei Nekhai, Director of the RCMI Proteomics Core Facility at Howard University, has kindly agreed to serve as Interim Core Director for the DC CFAR Basic Sciences Core. In addition, Dr. Michael Bukrinsky, Professor of MITM at GW, who served previously as Director of the Basic Sciences Core in the DC D-CFAR, has kindly agreed to serve as Interim Core Co-Director. Together Dr. Nekhai and Dr. Bukrinsky will provide leadership and oversight of Core services and training activities for DC CFAR basic sciences investigators.
