In this study, 201 Black and Latina transgender women were recruited in Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC and given a survey to assess multilevel determinants of HIV risk and treatment outcomes. In particular, the authors looked at how gender affirmation-related correlates may lead to HIV treatment interruptions. They found that the lack of gender affirmation may impede ART adherence, indicating that alleviating the barriers to gender affirming medical interventions (surgery, hormone use, etc.) could create a more stable environment that would be more conducive to HIV care management and treatment adherence.
