Developing HIV/AIDS Nursing Care Plans for People with HIV in Nursing Homes: A mixed methods approach
January 28, 2025
Alt Text

Half of people living with HIV (PLWH) in the United States were over 50 in 2018 (approximately 379,000 people) due to the successful response of patients stemming from advancements in antiretroviral treatment (ART). This population experiences complex health challenges, including multiple comorbidities and psychosocial issues such as social isolation and stigma. The aging process itself contributes to increased risks of functional decline, cognitive impairment, and difficulties with daily activities, all of which require tailored nursing competencies, which means core knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors that nurses must demonstrate to provide safe, optimal care. As the number of PLWH over 50 continues to grow, there is a pressing demand for specialized care that adequately addresses their unique needs. Current nursing practices often fall short in meeting these challenges, as much of the existing research has focused primarily on younger adults and children. Many nurses lack experience in caring for PLWH over 50, who often have a higher rate of comorbid conditions compared to the general HIV population. This gap underscores the urgent need for specialized nursing protocols informed by the experiences and healthcare needs of aging PLWH.

Utilizing North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA-I) classifications, Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) and Nursing Outcome Classifications (NNN Linkage) enhance care strategies for PLWH over 50. By incorporating NNN classifications into nursing practices, healthcare providers can better address the multifaceted challenges faced by these individuals, ultimately enhancing the quality of care delivered. However, the development and application of an NNN linkage has not been identified for PLWH in NHs. Research is urgently needed to improve HIV/AIDS nursing care development and application for NH nurses. This study aims to explore the healthcare educational needs of nurses by interviewing and surveying HIV/AID Gerontological Nurse Practitioner experts and PLWH over 50 (Aim 1, 2) and to develop and validate core HIV/AIDS NNN linkages for PLWH (Aim 3).
