Current HIV/AIDS Research Activities:

My research interest is understanding the immunopathogenesis of HIV infection. Particularly, the molecular pathways involved in the immune activation of the CD4 and CD8 T cell pools that lead to immune dysfunction and failure to achieve viral control. The understanding of these mechanisms is critical to identify targets of immune intervention to restore the immune system and eliminate the viral reservoir. In this area, our research efforts are focused on:

•  The contribution of cytokines associated to CD4 T cell depletion (IL-7) and viral replication (Type I IFN) driving in activation of the CD4 and CD8 T cell pools. 
•  Pre-clinical studies to address the potential use of check-point inhibitors to restore immune function. 
•  Molecular pathways coupling immune activation and inflammation/coagulation in patients with HIV infection.
