DC CFAR Investigator, Mark Burke, PhD, along with his colleagues have published an article in  MDPI Brain Sciences entitled, "Hippocampal Neuronal Loss in Infant Macaques Orally Infected with Virulent Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV)".

This article discusses a study to evaluate the neurological impact of HIV on children in terms of loss of brain growth, motor abnormalities and cognitive dysfunction.  Utilizing the pediatric simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection model, the researches tested the hypothesis that early-life SIV infection depletes neuronal population in the hippocampus.  The results found underscore the need for early diagnosis and treatment, including therapeutics targeting the central nervous system.
