USCA 2019

The 2019 United States Conference on AIDS (USCA), held in Washington, DC on September 5th - 8th, focused on the plan to end the HIV epidemic in America.

DC CFAR HIV Cure Scientific Working Group (SWG) members, Alberto Bosque, Manya Magnus, A. Toni Young, and Riko Boone presented an interactive session entitled "HIV Cure Research and the Role of Community". While acknowledging the implications for populations that have been historically mistreated, marginalized and underrepresented in biomedical research, attendees learned about the various strategies for development of an HIV cure and the integral role community members play in guiding those pursuits -- individually as study volunteers, through participation on community advisory boards, or collectively as persons impacted by HIV. This session used real-time polling to assess audience members' experiences and attitudes toward HIV cure research.

DC CFAR CAB member Ron Simmons presented a poster on the Bodemé Workshop, an HIV prevention intervention designed for young black gay men. DC CFAR Community Coordinator, Marcia Ellis and DC CFAR CAB member Abby Charles co-presented at a session hosted by the Women's HIV Research Collaborative entitled "The Future is Female: Women of Color Leadership in the HIV Movement"

Other DC CFAR participants included Michael Kharfen, Carlos Rodriguez-Diaz, George Kerr, Susan McCarley Shepard, Martha Cameron, SaVanna Wanzer, Wallace Corbett and Melissa Turner.
