DC CFAR  Investigator, Adeline Koay, MBBS, Assistant Professor, Department of Infectious Diseases, School of Medicine, Children's National Medical Center, recently presented a poster at the Inter-CFAR Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) Symposium in Machakos, Kenya (Jan 31-Feb 2, 2019). Her poster detailed the differences in the gut microbiome between HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected infants in SSA.

The Inter-CFAR SSA Symposium was organized by the University of Washington CFAR and attended by approximately 100 people. The pre-conference workshop for early stage investigators was invaluable, with a Specific Aims lightning round, mentorship and manuscript writing tips and overview of NIH funding options by NIH Program Officers. The symposium also included interactive discussions on PrEP use in SSA, a basic science plenary, focus on oral health, and challenges of adolescent HIV care. This meeting provided an avenue for establishing collaborators, identifying new mentors and networking with other researchers in SSA.
