Current HIV/AIDS Research Activities:

  • Our research focus is primarily Alzheimer's disease (AD), but we are now faced in clinic with the difficult differential of HAND versus AD (or HAND versus mild cognitive impairment, MCI). This area requires further research as HIV+ individuals age into the typical range of MCI and AD (>65). We are participating in biomarker development (CSF proteomics and neuroimaging studies including vMRI, fMRI, FDG-PET, amyloid PET, and tau PET), and collaborate with our colleagues in Neurology, Neuropsychology and Pathology (Brain Bank of autopsied individuals) at Georgetown Univ. and elsewhere. See the front page of memory.georgetown.edu for a list of studies currently seeking research participants.

Current HIV/AIDS Educational Activities:

  • Education to the public and healthcare professionals on cognitive assessment and evaluation, differential diagnosis and management of the dementias, and research strategies now in progress for diagnosis and treatment of cognitive decline with aging.

Current HIV/AIDS Clinical Activities:

  • The clinicians of the Memory Disorders Program at Georgetown University provide clinical care for older individuals with cognitive disorders and dementias. In addition, we offer interested and eligible individuals and study partners a menu of options for research participation.
