The DC CFAR is pleased to announce that Dr. Kim Blankenship (AU) has been named as a Co-Director of the Developmental Core joining Dr. Michael Bukrinsky (GW), Dr. Anthony Wutoh (HU), Dr. Sylvia Silver (GW) and Dr. Mark Burke (HU). Dr. Blankenship, who previously served as a Co-Director of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Core, brings complementary expertise in social and behavioral sciences to the leadership of the Developmental Core. In this role, she will promote the Core's goal of developing the next generation of HIV researchers and will provide an essential connection to early stage and new HIV investigators at American University.
Dr. Blankenship is Professor of Sociology and the Associate Dean of Research in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University and serves as the founding and acting Director of the Center on Health, Risk and Society. Her research focuses primarily on systems of race, class and gender inequality that produce vulnerability to HIV (with an emphasis on mass incarceration, policing, and housing) and on structural interventions to address them, including community mobilization.
